The Bed Race is VIP’s major annual fundraising event. Teams of five from local churches, schools, businesses, etc. construct an actual bed on wheels and decorate it with the theme of their choice. Each team raises money to compete for the Merit Award and to support VIP. On the last Saturday in February (race day!) we all meet at 14th St. and Broadway in Uptown Columbus and race the beds!
The VIP Bed Race encourages your team to build a bed on wheels, then race your bed (using manpower only) against other teams for awards and prizes. Teams must have a minimum of five people to run the actual race – one rider & four runners to push the bed.
The race course is a straight run on 14th Street starting from 1st Avenue to Broadway (at the corner of Country’s BBQ). It is approximately 150 yards long.
Awards are given for the following:
Susan Scroggs Memorial Merit Award – for the most money raised by a team
Tom Black Memorial Fastest Bed Award – best overall in two heats
Donna Souerwine Memorial Best Theme – most creative theme as determined by local celebrity judges
Heath Jackson Memorial Team Spirit Award – for the team who brings the most fans. Fans must report to the VIP booth to be counted!
Crowd’s Choice – People in the crowd can vote for their favorite bed! $1 per vote.
Winning Team for each Division – School, Church, Business, and Junior
